Medical Treatment Price Comparison India @ abroad

Orthopedic Surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and nonsurgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders. The word Orthopedics comes from two Greek words, ortho, meaning straight and pais, meaning child. Originally, orthopedic surgeons dealt with bone deformities in children, using braces to straighten the child's bones. With the development of anesthesia and an understanding of the importance of aseptic methods in surgery, orthopedic surgeons extended their role to include surgery involving the bones and related nerves and connective tissue.

Orthopedic sometimes spelled orthopaedic surgery is surgery performed by a medical specialist, such as an orthopedist or orthopedic surgeon, trained to deal with problems that develop in the bones, joints, and ligaments of the human body.

Some of the conditions and diseases an orthopaedic surgeon treats include:

  • Abnormalities of the fingers and toes.
  • Back pain, ruptured disks, sciatica and scoliosis.
  • Bone tumors, muscular dystrophy and cerebral palsy.
  • Club foot, bunions, bow legs, knock knees and unequal leg length.
  • Fractures and dislocations.
  • Growth abnormalities.
  • Osteoarthritis.
  • Osteoporosis.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Sports or work-related injuries.
  • Tendon injuries, pulled muscles, bursitis and torn cartilage.
  • Torn ligaments, sprains and strains.
  • Arthroscopic (Keyhole) surgery

Arthroscopic surgeries are known as Keyhole surgeries as the incision for the operation is the size of a small hole in the skin. This surgery deals the operations of joints. Recovery in the case of this surgery is much faster in comparison to the traditional surgery. Keyhole surgery can be done in a number of body parts like shoulder, knee, wrist, ankle, and so on. The most performed keyhole surgery is of the knee joints. For a normal arthroscopic surgery, one has to stay in the hospital only for a day or 2 but physical exercise after the surgery is extremely important.

    Spinal Surgery

Spinal surgery includes operation of the degenerative, congenital and developmental disorders of the spine. The complete spine surgery program is a comprehensive interdisciplinary service that requires orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, neurologists, physical and rehabilitation medicine and anesthesia. Technological advancements in the field of medicine, along with traditional disc surgeries of back and neck, microscopic surgeries, spinal tumors, endoscopic spinal surgery and minimal surgeries are also being performed.

    Orthopedic Surgery Benefits

The major benefit of orthopedic surgery in India, is the absolutely affordable and pocket-friendly prices of treatment as in compared to other countries of the world. Indian offers orthopedics treatments from internationally-trained medical practitioners who are assisted by dedicated staff/assistants. Best state-of- the-art equipment and even robotic surgery are used for the treatments in this field of medicine.

Total Knee Replacement is a surgical procedure wherein diseased knee is treated by removing the damaged cartilage and bone and replacing it with synthetic one. The materials used to create an artificial joint are made up of metal (titanium or cobalt chrome) and are strong and long lasting. Since they produce less friction, they are optimal for joint function.

Osteoarthritis occurs from ‘wear and tear’ and is the most common reason for the total knee replacement. It usually occurs after the age of 50 and is a genetic problem. When the tissue covering the bones softens and wears away, the bone began to rub against each other and leads to severe pain.

    Rheumatoid Arthritis

When the tissues surrounding the bone releases excessive fluid due to inflammation, it causes damage to cartilage and other parts of the joint and causes pain and stiffness.

    Oxinium Total Knee Replacement

In Oxinium Total Knee Replacement, the surgeons treat the knee injuries in young men and women. Owing to their high activity levels, most conventional knee implants last only for 10 to 15 years. Oxinium knee implants offer a durability of 30 to 35 years at at a stretch. These implants are designed of metal composites made up of ceramic and coated with oxygen which made them extremely durable and long lasting.

    Benefits and Post operative care

The advantages of Total Knee Replacement are pain relief, improved mobility and improved quality of life. During your stay in the hospital, a physiotherapist will teach you exercises to make your knee stronger. You stay in the hospital will not be  more than 6 to 10 days. Usually, patients who undergo half knee replacement have a shorter hospital stay.

    Causes of Hip Replacement

The most common reason that leads to hip replacement is Osteoarthritis, which causes damage to the hip joint. It is most often caused by wear and tear of aging. It makes the cartilage covering the hip joint useless, resulting in soreness and rigidity. Other conditions which lead to hip replacement surgery include rheumatoid arthritis, traumatic arthritis, avascular necrosis, osteonecrosis (loss of the blood supply to the thigh bone) and bone tumors.

    Procedure of Hip Replacement Surgery

During a traditional hip replacement surgery, which usually lasts for 1 to 2 hours, the surgeon makes a 10 to 12 inch incision is made over the side of the hip through the muscles. The muscles are detached from the hip. Once the joint surface is exposed, the surgeon takes out the diseased bone and cartilage from the hip joint. A cut shaped implant is then attached to the bone of the hip socket. A smooth plastic surface is attached to the implant to allow free movement of the joint.   Thereafter the surgeon reinstates the head of the femur and acetabulum with new artificial parts.  A metal stem is inserted into the femur to a depth of about 6 inches. The stem implant is attached to the bone tissue either through cement or without cement. Thereafter a metallic ball is placed on the top of the stem. The new hip is made up of metal that allow natural sliding movement of the joint.

    Benefits of Hip Replacement Surgery

With new technology and advancement in surgical techniques, today artificial hips can last for a lifetime. With the emergence of new socket implants for the pelvis, the sockets can be replaced without hampering the  other portions of the hip joint. People who undergo hip replacement can get back to work within two months of surgery.

There are some cases where loosening of implant leads to the failure of total hip replacement. In such cases, a patient will undergo revision surgery. A revision surgery depends upon the complications of artificial implant along with bone restoration. From the perspective of revision surgery,  the cemented knee procedure is very reliable with around 90 to 95 percent success rate. The advantage is that such type of knee replacement gets immediately stable and one can immediately start walking. Currently, cemented knee replacement is the most common procedure.

Foot and ankle surgery is a sub-specialty surgery type of orthopedics section which deals with the treatment, diagnosis as well as prevention of any kind of disorders occurring in the foot and ankle.

Types of Foot and Ankle Surgery

Though such surgeries take normally a day’s time but one needs to stay in the hospital for around 5 days.

Bunions is   that condition which occurs because of the enlargement or overgrowth of the  big toe joint. It slowly  drifts away from the others in the reverse direction. When it rubs with the shoes, it becomes the cause of pain and irritation. This can be corrected through surgery.

    Hammer Toes
The condition when the human toes become claw-shaped or are permanently bent, it is known as hammer toes. This can be corrected through a number of ways such as arthroplasty and arthrodesis . These surgeries take a span ranging from an hour to a day.

Benefits of Foot and Ankle surgery

There are various benefits of foot and ankle surgery. Some are mentioned below:

  • Relief from pain
  • Restoration of joint function in patients
  • Getting rid of osteoarthritis, traumatic arthritis or rheumatoid arthritis
  • Ability to maintain movement in the joints
  • A more normal walking gait pattern
  • Protection of the  surrounding joints
  • A range of movement of ankle and foot
